Saving a tree from ring bark?
MY horse has decided to eat the bark around my trees, she has not completely gone around them some have only a little bark on them around the base, I have since taken the horse out of the paddock.
Is there anything i can paint on the exposed parts of the tree? they are poplur trees full grown, will they die?.
The short answer is no. There is nothing you can do for the tree. Depending on the WIDTH of the ring, and the species, it might survive. If the ring is wider than… oh… an inch, and its most of the way around the tree, its going to die. If its smaller than and inch sometimes the tree will have enough energy to reconnect its vascular system. But, I’ve seen what horses do to trees, and its probably pretty bad.
They do make a chemical dressing for tree wounds, but these often do more harm than good by keeping moisture against the wood, causing rot.
And just a heads up- there are many tree species that are poisonous to horses if eaten. In the East, watch out for cherries especially.
