What I can do to insulate the basement?
I'm moving into a friend who is renting a house. And my lounge suite placed in a corner the basement. The basement temperature is about 72 degrees F. I live in southwest Ohio, and the average summer / winter temperature here is about 85-90/10-25 degrees F. My question is, what I can do to insulate the basement, to keep warm in winter? The basement is unfinished and has no insulation. We rent, so there's not much I can do what is home improvement. So now, my friend suggested bed sheets hanging from the ceiling in the living area and to end an insulation blanket. This may be my only option, but would like more input. Do not care if it looks bad taste, as long as not too cold down there. Besides, I know many suggest not moving, but I can not resist the offer of care to me. The monthly rent is only $ 275 mo. Plus public services. All suggestions are welcome! Thanks Jason
The soil around Dayton is about 56F, so it's not like you need a lot isolation. If too much tight, you will be happy with moisture problems than you think. Probably there are cracks in the walls. Use spray foam insulation to fill them. The windows are probably more leaks than hell. Placement of storm windows on the outside, and put another sheet of clear plastic on the inside. Part of the floor will be above ground. You may want to cover the walls with foam lining. Cold floors are miserable. You have to not only carpets, but the filling too. Good luck!
