More than two decades ago, someone gave me a painted tile for use in the kitchen. The counter is protected from the hot pan bottom this trivet. Although it is pasted back together, chips and missed the hanging bracket, the tile is held in a place of honor, surviving several movements.
The painted tile is decorated with the last two lines of the poem "The Art of Living." Even today, these words touched me deeply because there is something beautiful being able to give something to which we are. Sometimes I used to fear when I have to give, because I was so focused on what I had. When I decided to evaluate I had to offer, my attitude changed.
TIME
The gift of time is a most precious asset. It takes very little in material wealth to be able to make someone feel special. During a week of his childhood, one of my kids fell asleep listening to my old sewing machine humming. A superhero costume and Cape was the end of the week. A couple of months ago, I was organizing a closet and found that he had kept the mask and a shirt that had many years ago.
TALENTS
My grandmother, a wonderful example for me for several weeks of work each year to produce wonderful treasures crochet as Christmas gifts for friends and family. She does not get overwhelmed, rushed or overspend, but rather made good use of time and materials that had in hand.
Think creatively
Creativity requires me to be the first thankful for what I have and I wonder how they might share it. Only then can you focus on the possibilities. Painting and other decorations used and can give free items a second life. How many children would you like know that a custom bike-painted or hand-stenciled chair? With a little planning, you will quickly discover creative opportunities. What skills have? Instead of looking for the perfect gift, could you combine several smaller elements? Are there any materials available in the offseason that can be used later? Do you have surplus items that someone else might enjoy? Do you know someone who would love to give their ancient crafts, sewing supplies or tools of a good home?
Pass
As I've gotten older, my goal was not only making the special moments go through my kids, but to participate in the preparation so that they also enjoy the gift of giving. While it may be learning a particular skill art /, My children are helping to design labels and packaging and then enjoy the fun of sharing those gifts with which we are. Often make the items with any particular person in mind. Can be fun to speculate on who might enjoy Las freshly baked cookies.
We have found it fun to give people things they did not expect. . . . and I think they are richer in process.
I located the poem and included it below. I have not been able to learn who wrote it.
THE ART OF LIVING
To Touch the cup with eager lips and taste not, drain;
To attract and tempt and have a joy, and not get it;
A stroke and caress a joy, however, keep the light;
To see the sunset in the west without regret;
To greet his arrival in the east, the night forgetting;
To quell the attention in happiness and sorrow with laughter;
Carry out the current closure, without questioning the afterlife;
To have enough to share, to know joy to give;
To thrill with all the sweets of life – which is living.
