Heart stints “smash” plaque against the walls of the arteries -why not just remove the plaque vs using stints?
I was told that stints smash the plaque againts the artery walls – therefore, freeing up the “clog”. My question is, why not just REMOVE the plaque vs “smashing” it against the artery wall? I.e. – smashing it against the artery wall still keeps them there while I would think removing it from the body entirely would be much better.
Theoretically your suggestion is excellent. It is a different technique known as atherectomy. But the device is costlier and can cause perforation of the wall of the artery sometimes. Stenting is an easier, cheaper and effective option. It is also widely available in all major cardiovascular centres.
