Why do many people think Mexicans are a “race”?
The population of Mexico is as racially and culturally diverse as the United States.The Mexican population is composed of Mestizos(those of mixed European and Indigenouse ancestry),American Indians(most strongly prefer to be identified by their tribal name rather than”Indian”,such as Mayas,Zapotec,mixtec,etc…)White(of European ancestry mainly from Spain,France,Italy,Portuguese,German,etc.)and Black(of African ancestry,mainly the direct descendants of slaves,that were brought to Mexico by the Spaniards during the slave trade period.
Out of ignorance. People are too lazy to pick up a history book. This is exactly the reason I did earn a history degree; to learn and appreciate the cultures that exist. Perhaps the reason they don’t want to learn, is because they will see exactly how diverse we really are. It would really blow their little minds away. Mexicans are definitely not a race, but a political identification of people who live or derive from right below the US border.
